Virgin Islands Montessori School & Peter Gruber International Academy. - Community Mural Project

Overview

I was invited by the school to collaborate with students on the design and creation of a campus mural. Working closely with art teacher Sarah Cornette, we developed a series of creative workshops that introduced students to the mural-making process while encouraging them to explore ideas about their school, community, and life in the Virgin Islands.

The final design was shaped by student contributions and incorporates characters, local landscapes, cultural references, and imaginative elements inspired by their everyday experiences. The completed mural now serves as a vibrant and welcoming feature of the school campus.

Project Goal

To create a high-quality mural that activates the environment and reflects the unique identity of the school community. The project aimed to engage students in a collaborative creative process while producing a lasting artwork that is inspiring, inviting, and visually impactful.

Client

Virgin Islands Montessori School & Peter Gruber International Academy

Timeline

April 27, 2022 – May 17, 2022

Process

The project began with classroom activities, brainstorming sessions, and collaborative drawing exercises that encouraged students to share their ideas and stories. These concepts informed a series of sketches, studies, and renderings that were presented to the school before moving into the final painting phase.

Outcome

The completed mural celebrates the creativity and diversity of the student community while transforming the campus with a colorful, engaging work of public art. Through direct participation in the design and painting process, students became active contributors to a permanent piece that reflects their collective voice and experiences.

Below are images of the completed mural, along with concept sketches, studies, and preliminary renderings developed during the design phase.
