Overview

The Whitby School Mural was a collaborative public art project created in partnership with students and staff. Designed as both a creative and educational experience, the mural brought together a diverse group of participants to contribute ideas, explore artistic techniques, and help transform a shared school space through art.

Project Goal

The primary goal of this project was to engage students in the artistic process while introducing them to a variety of painting techniques, materials, and approaches to visual storytelling. Beyond creating a finished mural, the project aimed to encourage creativity, collaboration, and confidence by giving students the opportunity to contribute directly to a large-scale artwork within their school community.

Timeline

2023

The project unfolded over several phases, including concept development, collaborative planning sessions, technique demonstrations, painting workshops, and final installation. Throughout the process, students and staff actively participated in bringing the mural from initial ideas to completion.

Process

Working closely with students and faculty, I guided participants through the development of the mural while introducing different methods of mark-making, color application, layering, and mixed-media techniques. One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was witnessing how quickly students embraced new artistic approaches and developed confidence in their creative abilities.

This experience reinforced the value of exposing young artists to a range of materials and processes at an early age. The collaborative nature of the project fostered a sense of ownership and pride among participants, resulting in a vibrant mural that reflects the creativity and spirit of the Whitby School community.

This project was an inspiring reminder of how public art can serve as both a creative expression and a meaningful educational experience. Below are selected images documenting the process and final installation.
